RIGHT TO WATER : The Forum “Solidarity for water in countries of the Niger Basin” to be held in mid-October in Bamako

The Chirac Foundation, in partnership with the Malian Government and the Niger Basin Authority (ABN) is organizing from 17 to 18 October in Bamako, the Forum “Solidarity for water in countries of the Niger Basin”.

According to the Chirac Foundation, the Forum will be the occasion to appeal for mobilization in favour of the right to water and sanitation in the River Niger region and encourage joint management of river resources.

The conclusions of the Forum will serve as contribution from countries of the Niger Basin in the framework of the preparation by the African region for the World Water Forum (March 2012 in Marseille) piloted by the African Ministers’ Council on Water (AMCOW).

YOUNG PROFESSIONALS' CONFERENCE : Opening of registrations

The East Africa Young Water Professionals (EAYWP), which is organizing its first Conference from 11 to 13 December in Kampala, Uganda, has opened the registrations for this important meeting.

The main theme of the Conference, which will bring together all young professionals in the water sector, is: “Water for tomorrow: a collective responsibility”. Participants will have the opportunity to reflect on the constitution of a pan-African network of young professionals and how to establish it in the different African regional blocks.

 TUNISIA: ICRC offers support to SONEDE in the Ben Guerdane and Remada regions

The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) has offered support to the Société nationale d'exploitation et de distribution des eaux (SONEDE) of Tunisia, to improve potable water supply in the two seriously affected Ben Guerdane and Remada regions.

To deal with the massive inflow of populations from Libya, which is exerting considerable pressure on water resources in Tunisia’s South-West border region, the ICRC has embarked on construction works that will help increase the volume of water supplied to some 100,000 people.

At Ben Guerdane, a 5.3-km pipeline has been constructed to link the existing wells to the regional reservoir serving the town, the surrounding villages, the Choucha refugee camp and even a village in Libya in the Djebel Nafoussa border region.

By mid-December, a second 10.2-km long pipeline will help improve water supply to the population of Remada.
