Web Writer / Sub-editor
The Web writer/sub-editor, reporting to the communications coordinator, serves IRC in two principal ways: as a writer and as an editor of electronic content. This individual carries responsibility for drafting and producing a wide range of materials, including feature stories, shorter articles for the website and the IRC’s e-newsletter, press releases and contributions to the annual report and other corporate products.
This position is an excellent opportunity for a professional with well-developed written and verbal communication skills to contribute to improving the lives of people in Asia, Africa and Latin America.
The successful candidate will provide support in the following areas: publications, web content management, and material development/repackaging. He/she will have a key role to play in the organisation’s current efforts to strengthen and refocus its communication capacity and in the delivery of a newly completed comprehensive digital strategy.
This position be could a full-time position or be filled by a freelancer who would like to commit to working with IRC.
Writing as well as sub-editing and proofreading a wide variety of WASH-related content for online publication to effectively contribute to IRC’s mission of a world where everyone has access to water, sanitation and hygiene services.
Specific responsibilities (detailed list of tasks and responsibilities is available)
1.Writing high impact stories/articles, features, profiles, news briefs, sidebars, and other content to capture IRC’s work and findings for the website.
2.Proofreading online publications in accordance with established style guidelines.
3.Perform a wide range of editorial functions, from brainstorming and researching story ideas to writing.
4.Writing and producing a regular project e-newsletter.
5.In the process of the revamping IRC's web presence, work closely with the senior web editor to produce the content of the organisation’s website, including gathering and analysing appropriate research content and writing reviews.
6.Be part of the development team delivering the new website and content.
7.Together with the communication’s team respond to general inquiries from the public and other readers.
8.Contribute to the development of team skills in writing for the web.
•Experience of at least 3 years writing for the web and communications
•Experience with message development
•Bachelor degree in journalism, communication or field relevant for the position.
•Native English speaker with a good knowledge of grammar, punctuation, style, and format. Knowledge of French or Spanish would be an advantage but not essential.
•At least 3 years of writing experience e.g. for publications, blogs, websites.
•Relevant experience in science writing and working in the developing world is preferred.
•Ability to understand and interpret information for diverse sources and interpret it for equally diverse audiences.
•Good time management and organisational skills.
•Excellent communication and intercultural skills and a well-developed sense of humour.
•Based in or willing to be based in the Netherlands.
Details of the position:
IRC has a working week of 36 hours. IRC welcomes applicants of any nationality, the post will require obtaining a working permit for The Netherlands (granted automatically for EU citizens), and will require being physically based in The Netherlands. You will initially be offered a year contract at a Project Officer level, with a gross monthly salary in BBRA scale 9 up, based on a 36 hours working week, depending on qualifications and experience; and a competitive benefit package amongst which are 23 days of annual leave and 26 ADV days (total of 49 days leave per annum) based on a 36 hours working week; a 13th month and participation in the Pension fund with ABP (partially paid by the employer).
